I’m lucky enough to live in Manhattan where there are vast choices in everything from neighborhood bars to corner bodegas. The Union Square Greenmarket is abundant in options of local and seasonal fruit, vegetable and all sorts of other delicious foods. Some of my favorite things to buy there are apples. Above are some pictures I took while browsing one day. Some are from the Union Square Greenmarket and some are from the market in the Bronx. This is a recipe for baked apples which are a great dessert and even more delicious when they are crisp and abundant in the fall. It tastes like the gooey, delicious, center of an apple pie. It’s also easy to make for just one person and really yummy as a topping for oatmeal.
1 large apple (any kind will do but I prefer Gala or Honeycrisp)
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon instant oatmeal
1 pinch nutmeg
1 pinch cinammon
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon raisins
1 teaspoon walnuts
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Take the core out of the apple and peel if desired.
2. Mix together the rest of the ingredients and stuff into the apple.
3. Bake about 20 minutes in a small oven safe dish. Top with ice cream if desired.
